5 Summer Tips for Maintaining Your Luxury Watches

June 12, 2026

Summer brings the perfect opportunity to showcase your collection, from the classic elegance of a Rolex Datejust to the bold, nautical presence of a Breitling Superocean. However, the season of sun and salt also brings unique challenges for high-end horology.

At MAXIMILLION WATCHES, we want to ensure your investment remains as pristine as the day you walked out of our showroom. Here are our five tips for maintaining your luxury timepieces during the warmer months:

1. Verify Your Water Resistance

Before you head to the beach or lounge by the pool, make sure your watch is ready for a dip. Water resistance isn’t a permanent state; gaskets can dry out or perish over time. If you’re planning on swimming with your watch, stop by our Bellmore location for a quick pressure test. Remember: never pull out the crown while the watch is wet.

2. The Golden Rule: Rinse After the Ocean

Saltwater is incredibly corrosive. Even professional-grade dive watches can suffer from “salt creep” if not handled properly. After a day at the beach, rinse your watch thoroughly with lukewarm fresh water to remove salt crystals and sand. This prevents the bezel from seizing and protects the integrity of the metal.

3. Mind Your Sunscreen and Scents

Your skin needs protection, but your watch does not. Sunscreen, bug spray, and even heavy colognes contain chemicals that can degrade rubber straps and react poorly with certain metal finishes. Apply your lotions and sprays first, let them dry completely, and then strap on your timepiece.

4. Be Cautious with Leather Straps

High temperatures and humidity are the natural enemies of leather straps. Sweat can cause leather to crack, discolor, and develop odors. For the summer months, we recommend swapping your leather for a stainless steel bracelet, high-grade rubber, or a NATO strap. These materials handle moisture and heat with far more grace.

5. Be Conscious of Magnetism and Heat

Avoid leaving your watch in a hot car or in direct sunlight on a patio table. Extreme heat can cause the lubricants inside the movement to thin or migrate, affecting its accuracy.
